Able Seafarer – U.S. Brig Niagara

Job Description:

The Brig Niagara is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Able Seafarer (AB) for the 2023 summer sailing season.

An AB is a senior deckhand and assists the mate in management of a watch during shipboard operations. This position is an opportunity for  professional mariners in traditional sail to develop in a leadership position in square rig. We seek applicants who are passionate about traditional sail, the continuance of square rig seamanship and sail training.

Responsibilities:

The AB works with the Mate of their watch to carry out the operations and duties of the watch. The AB assist the Mate in managing a watch and leads other deckhands, and trainees in the operation of the ship and training on deck and aloft. Able Seafarers participate and lead projects in the rigging of Niagara in the spring and lead maintenance projects throughout the sailing season.

Qualifications/Experience:

Applicants must have traditional sail experience, hold an AB Sail endorsement or higher, and be a U.S. citizen.

Applicants must have experience as a deckhand in traditional sail and be able to lead work aloft and on deck. Previous experience in square rig strongly preferred.

All crew will be required to follow Covid-19 health and safety guidelines as set by FNL, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, CDC and USCG. Vaccination for Covid-19 is required.

Compensation & Benefits: 

Pay is $900.00 bi-weekly. Berthing on the ship and meals are provided. There are shore facilities for crew at the Erie Maritime Museum.
